Indian Army

The Indian Army is the land-based arm of the Indian Armed Forces, tasked with safeguarding the country’s borders, maintaining internal security, and participating in disaster relief efforts. It is the largest component of India’s military, known for its discipline, valor, and extensive history. Established in 1895 during British rule, the Indian Army has been instrumental in various conflicts, including World War I, World War II, the Indo-Pak Wars of 1947, 1965, and 1999 (Kargil War), and the Indo-China conflicts of 1962 and 2020.

The Indian Army operates under the Ministry of Defence, with its headquarters in New Delhi. It is commanded by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and structured into several regional commands across India. The army’s regiments include infantry, artillery, engineers, mechanized forces, and elite units like the Para Commandos. The Indian Army also participates in UN peacekeeping missions, contributing to global stability and humanitarian aid.

The Indian Army plays a critical role in counterinsurgency operations in regions like Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and the Northeast. It is also actively involved in relief and rescue operations during natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and cyclones, highlighting its multifaceted responsibilities beyond national defense.

In April 2017, BOOM fact-checked a viral claim suggesting that actor Akshay Kumar had urged people to donate to an Army Welfare Fund.

BOOM found that while Akshay Kumar was involved in promoting an initiative to support families of martyred soldiers, there was no direct appeal from him asking for donations to a specific fund, clarifying the confusion surrounding the claim.
