How Pro-Pak X Handles Used AI-Driven Deepfakes To Exploit CJP Protests
BOOM found that this network circulated at least 20 AI-generated deepfakes linked to the CJP protests.
As protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) gathered momentum at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, a well-established network of Pakistan-linked X handles flooded the platform with AI-manipulated videos and fabricated voiceovers falsely attributed to Indian military personnel and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders.
These AI-altered videos showed them making statements either attacking the protesters or expressing support for the movement. BOOM found that this network circulated at least 20 AI-generated deepfakes linked to the CJP protests.
The deepfakes sought to distort the online discourse around the movement by manufacturing inflammatory statements against protesters, suggesting divisions within the Indian security establishment and falsely linking the CJP to Pakistan.
Several of these deepfakes depicted BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, mocking student grievances or threatening demonstrators with arrests, job blacklisting and the use of state force.

These videos are the latest examples of a coordinated disinformation campaign targeting India since Operation Sindoor. BOOM had reported on the same network in December 2025, when accounts such as @InsiderWB and @Hawkss_eye repeatedly appeared in debunks published by BOOM and other Indian fact-checkers.
Military And Police Officials Falsely Shown Opposing Or Supporting The Crackdown
The campaign also targeted India’s security establishment by cloning the voices of senior military officers and Delhi Police officials.
Deepfakes attributed statements to Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, Lieutenant General Rajeev Puri and Chief of Defence Staff Raja Subramani. The fabricated videos claimed that soldiers had resigned over the crackdown, accused students of working with external forces, or criticised the government’s handling of the protests.
Other AI-generated videos included Additional Commissioner of Police Rajiv Ranjan and DCP Sumit Jha either defending the crackdown or claiming that they were resigning after being forced frame protesters, respectively.
Deepfakes showing BJP Leaders threatening or supporting students
Apart from Modi's deepfake dismissing the concerns of student protesters, the campaign also targeted several BJP leaders and ministers, including Piyush Goyal, Kiren Rijiju, J.P. Nadda, Bansuri Swaraj, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, Manoj Tiwari and Nishikant Dubey, with AI-generated voiceovers falsely depicting them of inciting violence against the CJP protesters.
The fabricated remarks ranged from threats of job blacklisting to calls for arrests and the use of state force. Other videos mocked concerns over paper leaks or portrayed Dharmendra Pradhan as refusing to resign. Pradhan resigned on July 25 as education minister following weeks of nationwide protests over alleged examination paper leaks led by the CJP.
Deepfakes Linking The CJP Protest To Pakistan
The pro-Pak network also attempted to portray the CJP movement as backed by or influenced by Pakistan. One Deepfake posted after Pradhan's resignation falsely showed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh blaming Pakistan for his resignation.
Another fabricated video mimicked an NDTV broadcast featuring Shiv Aroor falsely claiming that CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke had received money from Pakistani politician Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
During its weekly media briefing on July 24, 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it had “no information to share” when asked about allegations of foreign funding behind the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The MEA's fact-check handle also dismissed as "misleading" an X social media post that had claimed the ministry confirmed there was no foreign funding.
These deepfakes reveal a pattern by the network of exploiting political divisions through conflicting narratives, portraying the security establishment as divided over the July 20 police crackdown, the government as increasingly hostile towards students and protesters, and the Centre as blaming Pakistan for the education minister's resignation.
