West Bengal is a state located in the eastern part of India, bordered by Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Sikkim, and the Bay of Bengal to the south. The capital city is Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, which serves as the cultural, political, and economic hub of the state. West Bengal is known for its rich history, diverse culture, literature, music, and vibrant festivals.
Historically, West Bengal has played a central role in India's freedom struggle, with prominent leaders like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, and Swami Vivekananda contributing to its socio-political landscape. It was also the epicenter of the Bengal Renaissance, which saw a significant cultural and intellectual awakening in the 19th century. The state was partitioned in 1947, leading to the creation of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and the present-day West Bengal.
The state has a diverse economy, with industries like jute, tea, textiles, and information technology playing significant roles. Agriculture is also a major sector, with rice, jute, and tea being key crops. The Siliguri Corridor, often referred to as the "Chicken's Neck," serves as a strategic passage connecting the northeastern states to the rest of India.
Politically, West Bengal has been a battleground for different ideologies. It was ruled by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M)-led Left Front for over three decades, from 1977 to 2011, making it one of the longest-serving democratically elected communist governments in the world. In 2011, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), led by Mamata Banerjee, came to power, marking a shift in the state's political landscape. Banerjee has since focused on issues like infrastructure development, social welfare schemes, and education reform. As of 2024, she remains the Chief Minister, following her re-election in the 2021 Assembly elections.
In June 2024, BOOM fact-checked a viral video claiming to show an Eid sacrifice in West Bengal.
BOOM was able to geo-locate the video to a residential complex in Mirpur, Bangladesh, debunking the false claim that it originated in West Bengal.
