Video Does Not Show West Bengal Minister Hoisting BJP Flag On Independence Day

A cropped video of Arjun Singh, Minister-in-Charge of the Department of Labour and Transport, Government of West Bengal, is being shared online with the false claim that it shows Singh hoisting his party’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) flag instead of the national flag during the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, 2026.

BOOM found that the video was recorded on July 6, 2026, when Singh took part in the inauguration of his Barrackpore office on the occasion of the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee.

In the 18-second-long video, Singh can be seen hoisting the BJP flag in front of his office in Barrackpore, West Bengal.

      The Claim

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) posted the video on its official Facebook page with a Hindi caption that translates to, "What greater insult to the national flag, the Tricolour, could there be on Independence Day than BJP supporters giving more importance to the BJP flag instead of the Tricolour? If this is not treason, then what is? Before Independence Day, these BJP supporters were organising “Har Ghar Tiranga” and “Tiranga Yatra” campaigns. Yet, on Independence Day, they deliberately insulted the Tricolour, thereby insulting the freedom fighters and the country itself."

Congress social media chairperson Supriya Shrinate also shared the video on August 15, 2026, along with a similar misleading claim.

      1. Video From July 6, 2026: We ran a related keyword search and found the video on Arjun Singh’s official Facebook page, where it was posted on July 6, 2026. Singh shared the video stating that it was recorded as part of the 125th Birth Anniversary celebration of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, in front of his office.

On the occasion of the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, I attended a quiz competition organized by Barrackpore Police Station under the @bkpcitypolice at Pramod Bhawan, with the participation of students from various schools.

      2. Clarification From Singh: On August 15, 2026, Arjun Singh shared a clarification on his verified X account, stating that the video was recorded during the inauguration of his Barrackpore office on July 6, 2026. Singh also cautioned that legal action would be taken against those deliberately circulating false propaganda against him.

Opposition parties are spreading false propaganda and misleading narratives against me.
The video posted on social media by political parties such as the @INCIndia and @RJDforIndia is not correct and far from truth.
