Video Of Rape-Murder Incident From Bangladesh Shared With False BJP WB Claim
BOOM found that the viral video is from Madaripur, Bangladesh showing the dead body of a rape and murder victim.

A disturbing video showing the recovery of the body of a rape and murder victim in Bangladesh is being shared on social media with the false claim that the incident took place in West Bengal and that Bharatiya Janata Party workers are accused in the case.
BOOM found that the video is from Shibchar in Madaripur district, Bangladesh, and shows the recovery of the body of 28-year-old Shampa Khatun. Bangladesh Police arrested a man identified as Faruk Mollah in connection with the case.
Violent clashes were reported between BJP's youth wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) supporters and Left-backed student organisations at Kolkata's Jadavpur University on August 20, 2026.
The Claim:
The video is being shared on X with captions claiming that it shows the body of a woman who was raped and murdered by BJP workers in West Bengal.
What We Found:
1) Video from Bangladesh
We ran a reverse image search using keyframes from the video and found reports carrying visuals from the same incident. The reports identified the victim as 28-year-old Shampa Khatun and stated that her body was recovered from Shibchar in Madaripur district, Bangladesh.
Bangladeshi news outlet Prothom Alo also reported on the incident, stating that Khatun had allegedly been raped and murdered before her body was dumped. Her one-year-old son, Abir, was also allegedly thrown into the Arial Khan River. Khatun’s body was recovered in Shibchar on August 19.
2) Bangladesh Police arrest accused Faruk Mollah
Bangladesh Pratidin, quoting Bangladesh Police, reported that Faruk Mollah, a resident of Bakherkandi, was arrested on August 21 in connection with Khatun’s rape and murder.
According to police, Mollah allegedly called Khatun to his house, where she was raped and killed, before her body was dumped in nearby bushes. Police also claimed they recovered items belonging to Khatun from his possession after his arrest.
