Republic Day

Republic Day in India is celebrated annually on 26th January to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India in 1950. It marks the day when India transitioned from a British Dominion to a sovereign republic, affirming its commitment to democratic principles. It is one of India’s three national holidays, symbolizing the country's unity, diversity, and democratic values.

The celebration in New Delhi is marked by a grand parade at Rajpath, showcasing India’s military prowess, cultural heritage, and advancements in science and technology. It includes spectacular march-pasts, tableaux representing various states and ministries, and performances by schoolchildren. The event is attended by dignitaries, including the President of India, who hoists the national flag and delivers the Republic Day address. It also honors the armed forces and presents gallantry awards to soldiers and civilians.

In January 2021, BOOM fact-checked a viral video shared with a misleading claim that it showed farmers practicing tractor stunts for the Republic Day parade amid the farmers' protests.

BOOM found that the video was nearly 11 months old, depicting a stunt by Subhash Lathwal in Haryana, unrelated to the Republic Day preparations.
