Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee is an Indian politician and the Chief Minister of West Bengal, serving as the leader of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). Born on January 5, 1955, in Kolkata, West Bengal, she previously served as India’s Railway Minister, becoming the first woman to hold the position. Known for her focus on social welfare, women’s development, and grassroots mobilization, Banerjee has been a prominent figure in Indian politics. Since becoming Chief Minister in 2011, she has implemented various programs to improve healthcare, education, and infrastructure across the state.

In April 2018, BOOM fact-checked a viral claim that Banerjee had barred TMC workers from singing Vande Mataram. This claim circulated alongside a 2006 video showing TMC MLAs going on a rampage, which was falsely linked to the supposed ban.

BOOM’s investigation revealed that the video had no connection to such a directive and that the narrative was misleading.

In September 2024, BOOM fact-checked a viral post claiming that the Chief Justice of India (CJI) had family ties to Banerjee's personal physician.

The Supreme Court registry debunked this claim, stating that it was factually incorrect and circulated with the intent to tarnish the judiciary's reputation.
