Kukis are known by various names across different communities, including Lushai, Darlongs, Rokhums, and Chins along the Burma border, while they refer to themselves as Hare-ems.

The ongoing Kuki-Meitei conflict in Manipur, India, stems from historical tensions and recent events. Triggered by a court recommendation to include Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribe category, it has led to violence and displacement. Unequal land distribution and political representation exacerbate the situation, fueling resentment among Kukis. Allegations of illegal migration further heighten tensions.

BOOM came across several misleading claims related to the Kukis during the on-going Manipur Conflict.

BOOM debunked a misleading claim about a video purportedly showing Manipur Police beating unarmed Kuki villagers. The video, in fact, was from March 2022 and depicted security personnel at a polling station during the state assembly election, not recent violence against Kuki villagers. BOOM debunked a misleading viral message alleging that Kukis were conducting search operations on trains from Guwahati to Silchar in Assam to find Meiteis. We confirmed with the Dima Hasao Police that the claim was false.
