The 2025 Bihar Legislative Assembly Election is expected to be held in October or November 2025, election dates are likely to be announced in September. Bihar has a total of 243 assembly seats. In previous assembly elections, held in October- November 2020, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won the majority of votes and Nitish Kumar became the Chief Minister. After 2 years on 9 August 2022, Kumar broke the alliance with BJP and resigned as the chief minister and rejoined the RJD led by Mahagathbandhan. He later returned to the BJP-led NDA on January 28, 2024, and was sworn in again as Chief Minister.
The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is made up of five parties: Janata Dal (United), Bharatiya Janata Party, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Hindustani Awam Morcha, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha. On the other side, the opposition alliance Mahagathbandhan includes the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India, Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party, and Vikassheel Insaan Party. Other important parties include Jan Suraaj Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Aam Aadmi Party.
The Election Commission of India launched a ?Special Intensive Revision? of the state voter lists on June 25, 2025, covering 7.89 crore names. While the initiative aimed to remove fake voters, it sparked panic among citizens. Opposition parties claimed it was a backdoor attempt to introduce the controversial National Register of Citizens (NRC). BOOM spoke to several individuals who had valid voter cards and documents but still found their names missing from the updated list. Following widespread criticism, the Election Commission issued fresh instructions on June 30. These stated that voters whose names were not in the 2003 voter list could simply enter their parents' details from that list, instead of submitting extra documents. They now only need to provide valid documents for themselves.
