Mexico

Mexico is a country in the southern part of North America, bordered by the United States to the north, Guatemala and Belize to the southeast, and surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Officially known as the United Mexican States, Mexico is the third-largest country in Latin America and is known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant traditions, and diverse geography, which includes deserts, rainforests, and mountain ranges.

Mexico has a long and complex history, with ancient civilizations such as the Maya and Aztecs contributing to its cultural foundation. It was colonized by Spain in the early 16th century, and after centuries of Spanish rule, Mexico gained independence in 1821. The country celebrates its Independence Day on September 16 each year.

Today, Mexico is a federal republic with a dynamic economy that is one of the largest in Latin America. It is known for its strong manufacturing sector, especially in the automotive industry, as well as its oil exports, tourism, and agricultural products. Mexico is a member of international organizations such as the United Nations, G20, and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), now called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Culturally, Mexico is famous for its cuisine, art, music, and festivals like Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Mexican cuisine, including dishes like tacos, enchiladas, and guacamole, is recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The country is also known for its contributions to art and architecture, including the works of famous muralists like Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.

In July 2020, BOOM investigated a viral video that falsely claimed to show Mexico dumping dead bodies into the sea due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

BOOM found that the video was actually from 2018 and originated in Russia, showing formation skydiving by a flying school. The video was misleadingly shared with false claims during the pandemic.
