The Indian National Congress (INC) is one of the two major political parties in India, along with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It is sometimes referred to as the Grand Old Party of India and is the party of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Indira Gandhi. Since independence, the INC has been the dominant political party in India. It has been in power for more than 50 of the last 70 years, and it has formed the government in every election since 1989. Its most recent term ended in 2014, when the BJP won a majority of seats in the Lok Sabha.
