Subramanian Swamy

Subramanian Swamy born on September 15, 1939 in Mylapore, Chennai, is an Indian politician and economist. He has served as a professor of Mathematical Economics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, before entering politics. Swamy’s political career includes terms as a Member of Parliament in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. He held office as the Minister of Commerce and Industry and the Minister of Law and Justice during the Chandra Shekhar government. He was a member of the Planning Commission of India and also the Chairman of the Commission on Labour Standards and International Trade under P. V. Narasimha Rao’s prime ministership.Swamy was the president of the Janata Party until 2013, after which he joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In September 2021, BOOM came across a misleading claim made by Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga that the photo shows Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy joining congress.

We found that the person highlighted in the picture was Congress leader Manish Chatrath and not Swamy. It was being widely shared to mislead the mass. We saw the watermark of ‘Getty Images’ on the viral picture and found the original picture clicked by Arvind Yadav, a photographer with Hindustan Times captioned, "Opposition Leaders Meet Today, Chart Out Strategy For 2019 Lok Sabha Polls."

Another false information was debunked by BOOM which had involved Swamy in July 2020.

An image showing Amit Shah ordered CBI probe for investigating Sushant Singh Rajput's death had been circulated widely at that time. But, we found that the letter was actually from Swamy and not Shah, who had appealed to PM Modi for a CBI probe into the actor's death.
