Nupur Sharma

Nupur Sharma, born on April 23, 1985, in New Delhi, India, is an Indian politician and lawyer associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Known for her strong stance on various political issues, Sharma has served as the official spokesperson for the BJP, frequently appearing in television debates and public discussions. Her political career began during her student days at the Delhi University, where she was active in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP.

Sharma rose to prominence within the BJP due to her articulate defense of party policies and positions, often addressing issues related to nationalism, cultural identity, and religious matters. She contested the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections against Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, but lost. In June 2022, Sharma was suspended from the BJP following controversial comments about the Prophet Muhammad, specifically regarding the age of his third wife, Aisha, at the time of their marriage and its consummation, along with other central doctrines in Islamic tradition. Her remarks sparked national and international backlash, leading to diplomatic tensions, public protests, and widespread debates over freedom of speech, religious sensitivity, and media ethics in India.
