Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is a key ministry in the Government of India responsible for maintaining internal security, law and order, border management, and domestic policy. The MHA oversees various functions, including the management of central armed police forces like the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Border Security Force (BSF), as well as disaster management, counter-terrorism efforts, and the administration of Union Territories. In July 2020, viral graphic that falsely claimed the government had announced the reopening dates for schools and colleges across India. The graphic, which appeared to be from Aaj Tak, was found to be doctored.

BOOM discovered that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had not issued any new guidelines regarding the reopening of educational institutions. Under its 'Unlock 2' guidelines, the MHA clearly stated that schools and colleges would remain closed until at least July 31, and any decision to reopen thereafter would involve consultation with parents. The misleading graphic was an attempt to spread misinformation amidst ongoing concerns over rising COVID-19 cases.
