The conflict between India and the Maldives originated from a social media dispute that evolved into a diplomatic row. It began when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lakshadweep and shared pictures of its beauty online, prompting some right-wing users saying that why one needs to visit Maldives. This led to derogatory remarks about Modi and India by some Maldivian ministers.

BOOM came across various false claims and misinformation regarding the India-Maldives conflict. Several hashtags like #BoycottMaldives started trending. A fake screenshot purportedly showing Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu apologizing to Indians circulated online, but our fact-check revealed that it was false. President Muizzu made no such apology, and his verified social media accounts showed no evidence of the alleged post. Another instance was the video circulating on social media claiming to show recent anti-India protests in the Maldives is actually from June 2023 during the 'India Out' protests. These protests were organized by opposition parties in Maldives and involved demonstrators wearing Modi masks and holding banners with slogans like "India Out."
