The Delhi Government administers the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, operating under a unique quasi-state structure. Established under the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act in 1991, the Delhi Government has a legislative assembly with 70 seats and an elected Chief Minister serving as the head of government. While it has jurisdiction over areas like education, healthcare, public transport, and water supply, key domains like law and order, police, and land remain under the control of the central government through the Lieutenant Governor (LG), who represents the President of India.
The Delhi Government is known for its focus on welfare policies, including initiatives like Mohalla Clinics for accessible healthcare, the Odd-Even scheme for pollution control, improvements in government schools, and subsidies for electricity and water. It has also introduced social welfare schemes, such as free bus rides for women and financial assistance to families of COVID-19 warriors who lost their lives during the pandemic.
Delhi’s political landscape is dynamic, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) having led the government since 2015. Arvind Kejriwal served as the Chief Minister until his resignation in September 2024. During his tenure, AAP's administration focused on transparency, education, healthcare reforms, and infrastructure development. Following Kejriwal's resignation, Atishi Marlena Singh was elected as the new Chief Minister of Delhi on 17 September 2024. Atishi’s government aims to continue AAP’s agenda, emphasizing governance reforms, public welfare, and development initiatives.
In May 2021, BOOM fact-checked a viral claim suggesting that the Delhi Government provided Rs 1 crore in financial assistance only to the family of Dr. Anas Mujahid, a deceased Muslim COVID-19 warrior.
BOOM found out that Dr. Mujahid’s family was not the only one to receive the financial aid, as the Delhi Government extended similar assistance to other COVID-19 warriors’ families, debunking the misleading claim.
