The Uttar Pradesh Police (UP Police) is the law enforcement agency of Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India. Established in 1861, it is one of the largest police forces in the world, responsible for maintaining law and order, preventing crime, and ensuring public safety across the state. The Director General of Police (DGP) heads the UP Police, overseeing multiple units, including the Special Task Force (STF), Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), Traffic Police, and Women’s Safety Units like 1090 Women Power Line.

The UP Police have played significant roles in managing large-scale events, elections, and protests, often facing criticism for handling sensitive situations, especially during high-profile cases, communal tensions, and farmer protests. Despite challenges, the force has undertaken modernization efforts, incorporating digital surveillance, cybercrime units, and training initiatives to improve efficiency and response capabilities.

In October 2020, BOOM fact-checked a viral morphed image claiming to show UP Police officers protesting against lathi-charging.

BOOM found that the original photo depicted Delhi Police officers holding posters during a demonstration in November 2019, following clashes with lawyers. The image was falsely presented to imply a protest within the UP Police, misleading viewers about internal dissent within the state’s law enforcement.
