MidJourney, operates as an independent research lab with a focus on design, human infrastructure and artificial intelligence. It works on the exploration of new mediums of thought and aims to enhance the imaginative powers of humans. This lab is self-funded and maintains a community on discord, where members collaborate to create new worlds and characters from text descriptions. MidJourney also offers a generative artificial intelligence program that produces images from natural language prompt, similar to other AI based image generation tools.

In June 2023, BOOM found a photograph showing “Hollywood actor Tom Cruise with his stunt doubles”.

We found that the photo was created using Midjourney and while debunking that misleading picture, we observed the details in the viral picture and identified three significant discrepancies present in the image. We also noticed that the user who posted the image mentioned in Thai that the images were created using Midjourney, in one of the comments.

In April 2023, BOOM found another photo made from MidJourney, showing PM Modi looking through a microscope incorrectly.

We found that the photo has been made using generative AI tool Midjourney and we also spotted a watermark containing the letters S.A.H.I.D. at the bottom right corner of the image. The fake photo was of fake hyper-realistic AI-generated images created using online tools that fact-checkers worry could be used to spread disinformation. The synthetic photo, was tweeted by a Twitter user claiming that the image shows the PM Modi pretending to be a doctor and looking through a microscope incorrectly.
