High Court refers to the principal civil courts of original jurisdiction in each state and union territory in India. These courts have the authority to hear appeals from lower courts and have the power to interpret the constitutionality of laws and regulations. Each state or a group of states has its own High Court, which functions under the jurisdiction of the Indian Constitution.

High Courts have both original jurisdiction (in some cases, such as matters concerning fundamental rights) and appellate jurisdiction (in most other matters). They are also empowered to issue writs, orders, or directions for the enforcement of fundamental rights and other legal rights. High Courts play a crucial role in the Indian judicial system, acting as a bridge between the lower courts (District and Sessions Courts) and the Supreme Court of India.

The Chief Justice heads each High Court, and judges are appointed by the President of India in consultation with the Chief Justice of India and the Governor of the respective state. High Courts handle a variety of cases, including civil, criminal, family, and constitutional matters.

The decisions of a High Court are binding on all lower courts within its jurisdiction. However, its decisions can be appealed to the Supreme Court of India, which is the highest judicial authority in the country.

High Courts are also responsible for the administration of justice within their respective states, including the oversight of lower courts and the administration of judicial services.

In February 2023, BOOM investigated a false claim alleging that Muslims had said 'Halal means spitting in food.'
