Delhi Municipal Corporation

The Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) is the primary civic body responsible for local governance, municipal services, and infrastructure development in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. Established under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act of 1957, it was initially a single unified entity. In 2012, it was trifurcated into three separate bodies: the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC). However, in 2022, these three bodies were reunified into a single Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to streamline governance and improve efficiency.

The DMC manages various civic services, including waste management, sanitation, public health, licensing, primary education, maintenance of parks, roads, and local markets, as well as the regulation of building activities. It plays a crucial role in maintaining Delhi’s urban infrastructure and ensuring essential services to residents.

The DMC is governed by elected representatives, with elections held every five years. The Mayor leads the municipal corporation, while the Municipal Commissioner oversees administrative functions. The elections are a significant part of Delhi’s local governance, often reflecting broader political trends in the city. Key issues in municipal elections include waste management, cleanliness, pollution control, healthcare facilities, and infrastructure development.

The DMC has faced challenges related to urbanization, population growth, waste disposal, pollution, and infrastructure maintenance. It has also been central to several public movements related to sanitation, road maintenance, and anti-encroachment drives.

In June 2021, BOOM fact-checked a viral image shared by former BJP minister Vijay Goel, claiming it showed the Delhi water crisis under AAP's administration.

BOOM found out that the image was from 2009, long before AAP came to power in 2015, debunking the misleading narrative.
