Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how the body processes blood sugar (glucose). It is primarily categorized into Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. In Type 1 diabetes, the body’s immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to little or no insulin production. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, is characterized by insulin resistance, where the body does not use insulin efficiently, often linked to lifestyle factors such as diet, physical inactivity, and genetics. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy and usually resolves after childbirth, though it can increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.

Globally, diabetes is a major health concern, associated with complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, vision loss, and nerve damage. It requires long-term management through medication, dietary changes, exercise, and regular monitoring of blood sugar levels. Awareness campaigns, public health initiatives, and ongoing medical research aim to educate people about diabetes prevention, management, and early diagnosis.

In December 2023, BOOM fact-checked a set of viral videos claiming to show popular TV anchors promoting a diabetes medicine.

BOOM found that the videos were fake, with the anchors' voices overlaid into the original footage to create a misleading narrative. This fact-check highlights how both photos and videos can be manipulated to mislead viewers.
