A deepfake of US President Donald Trump stating that the recent floods in Pakistan were caused by India opening dams in Kashmir, is viral on social media as an authentic comment by him.
BOOM ran the viral video through multiple AI detection models, which flagged it as likely AI-generated and voice-cloned.
The video is being shared against the backdrop of Pakistan facing one of its worst flood disasters in history. According to Al Jazeera, nearly two million people have been displaced in Punjab province as record monsoon rainfall and overflowing rivers have inundated entire towns.
The Claim
The viral video was shared on Facebook with the caption, "🔥When India releases water, Pakistan drowns. When India holds it back, Pakistan dries. Pakistan, always sinking or thirsting, never thinking." (archive link)
What We Found
BOOM found that the video has been digitally manipulated, with AI-generated audio overlaid on real footage of Trump.
- Original video traced to Forbes: A reverse image search led BOOM to a video uploaded by Forbes on May 31, 2025. The visuals in the viral clip match this recording, but in the original Trump was talking about China and did not reference India or Pakistan. Watch here.
- AI detection tools flag manipulation: BOOM ran the viral video through several deepfake and AI video detection models using Deepfake-o-Meter. Most of the models indicated a high likelihood of the visuals being AI-manipulated.
- Voice cloning detected: The extracted audio was tested separately with AI audio detection models on Deepfake-o-Meter, which showed a high likelihood of voice cloning being used to fabricate Trump’s remarks.
- No credible record of statement: BOOM checked media reports, official White House transcripts, and Trump’s verified channels but found no evidence of him making such a statement.
- Government fact-check: PIB Fact Check, the official fact-checking unit of the Government of India, posted on Facebook that the video is fake and AI-generated.
