The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is concerned with international public health. The WHO Constitution, which establishes the agency's governing structure and principles, states its main objective as "the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health." WHO works to achieve this by providing technical and financial assistance to countries to help them improve their health systems and set health standards; conducting research on public health issues and disseminating information on best practices; providing advice and support to governments on national health policies and strategies; and monitoring global health trends, responding to public health emergencies, and helping to prevent and control the spread of communicable diseases.
