Palanivel Chidambaram, commonly known as P. Chidambaram, was born on September 16, 1945, in Kanadukathan, Tamil Nadu. He is a prominent Indian politician, lawyer, and senior leader of the Indian National Congress (INC). Chidambaram has had a significant impact on India’s economic policies, serving in various key positions within the Indian government. Known for his expertise in finance, law, and governance, he has played a crucial role in shaping India’s economic landscape.
Chidambaram served as the Finance Minister of India across multiple terms, with his most notable tenures being from 2004 to 2008 and from 2012 to 2014, during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. As Finance Minister, he implemented major economic reforms, including measures to boost foreign direct investment (FDI), stabilize inflation, and enhance social sector spending. He was also India’s Home Minister from 2008 to 2012, focusing on strengthening national security and counterterrorism measures following the Mumbai attacks in 2008.
In addition to his political career, Chidambaram is an accomplished lawyer who has argued numerous cases in the Supreme Court of India. He is known for his writings on economic policy, governance, and legal matters, having contributed regularly to national newspapers and published several books.
In April 2024, BOOM fact-checked a viral claim suggesting that Rana Kapoor, co-founder of Yes Bank, is Chidambaram's son-in-law.
