Karnataka

Karnataka is a state in South India, bordered by Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and the Arabian Sea. Its capital, Bengaluru, also known as Bangalore, is the largest city and the leading tech hub of India, often dubbed the "Silicon Valley of India" due to its thriving IT industry. Other major cities include Mysuru, Mangaluru, and Hubballi-Dharwad. Karnataka's geography is diverse, encompassing the Western Ghats, coastal plains, and the Deccan Plateau.

The state has a rich cultural heritage with influences from ancient dynasties like the Chalukyas, Hoysalas, and Vijayanagara Empire, evident in architectural marvels like the Hampi ruins, Belur-Halebidu temples, and Mysore Palace. Karnataka is also known for its traditional art forms, including Yakshagana, Carnatic music, and Bharatanatyam. The state is home to a diverse linguistic and religious landscape, with Kannada as the official language and a significant presence of Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Jains.

Politically, Karnataka has witnessed power shifts between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian National Congress, and the Janata Dal (Secular). The state assembly elections, held every five years, often see high voter participation and significant political activity. The state’s economy is diverse, with key sectors including IT, biotechnology, agriculture, textiles, and tourism.

In September 2024, BOOM fact-checked a viral claim about a Ganesha idol being placed in a police van during a protest in Bengaluru.

BOOM spoke to the Bengaluru Central DCP, who clarified that the idol had been confiscated during a protest by Hindu organizations. The police later immersed the idol as per the religious rituals, debunking the misleading claim that the idol was being disrespected.
