Crimes against women refer to criminal acts that specifically target women due to their gender, often involving violence, harassment, or exploitation. These crimes include, but are not limited to, rape, domestic violence, sexual harassment, trafficking, dowry deaths, and acid attacks. Such crimes reflect deep-rooted gender inequality and societal norms that perpetuate discrimination and violence against women.

In India, laws like the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013, and the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013 (enacted after the Nirbhaya case) aim to address and reduce crimes against women. Despite these legal measures, incidents of violence remain high, and issues such as underreporting, societal stigma, and delays in justice continue to be significant challenges.

The Indian government and various NGOs work toward empowering women, raising awareness, and creating a safer environment through education, legal reforms, and social programs, but there is still a long way to go to ensure the safety and security of women.
