Horseshoe Bats Likely Origin Of SARS-CoV-2: Study

A study conducted by researchers at Pennsylvania State University’s Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics has claimed that the SARS-CoV-2 virus has most likely orginated in horseshoe bats. The study, published in Nature Microbiology, found that the virus has been circulating unnoticed among bats for decades. Researchers believe that the SARS-CoV-2's receptor-binding motif, important for specificity to human ACE2 receptors, is an ancestral trait shared by bat viruses and not acquired recently through recombination.

        Mumbai's Sero-Surveys Preliminary Findings Out

Around 57% of the samples collected from the slums and 17% of the samples collected from the non-slums in M-west, R-north and F-north of Mumbai have developed antibodies against COVID-19 show the preliminary findings shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Around 6936 samples were collected from the areas.

The civic body has interpreted these findings as a measure of good social distancing and containment measures conducted in the city. The higher prevalence in the slums has been attributed to the population density in the slums.

The BMC plans to further study these results to understand prevalence of herd immunity. The infection rate of the virus is only around 0.05-0.1% according to these findings.
