Zee News Falsely Claims Bangladesh Banned Jamaat-e-Islami
BOOM found that no such notification has been issued by the Bangladesh government and the the organisations have not been banned.
A Zee News Facebook post claiming that the Bangladesh government has designated Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, as banned organisations under the country’s Anti-Terrorism Act is false.
BOOM found that no such notification has been issued by the Bangladesh government and the the organisations have not been banned. Bangladesh’s Attorney General, Ruhul Quddus Kazal, also denied the claim, confirming to BOOM Bangladesh that it was “not true”.
The Claim:
In a Facebook post published on August 2, 2026, Zee News English claimed that the Bangladesh government had officially designated Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir and affiliated organisations as banned entities under the country’s Anti-Terrorism Act, citing a government notification.
Zee News English had shared the same claim a day earlier on August 1 and DNA also posted an Instagram post.

What We Found:
1) No Fresh Bangaldesh Govt Notification Exists
We checked the Bangladesh government’s official notifications, the Ministry of Home Affairs website, but found no notification issued on or around August 2, 2026, designating Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir or affiliated organisations as banned entities under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
2) Bangladesh Attorney General denies ban
BOOM Bangladesh reached out to Bangladesh’s Attorney General, Ruhul Quddus Kazal, who dismissed the claim as false. “It is not true,” Kazal told BOOM Bangladesh.
3) Bangladesh The Daily Star's retrospective article on JEI 2024 ban
We also found a retrospective article published by Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star on August 1, 2026.
The article looked back at events from August 1, 2024, when the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government banned Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, under the Anti-Terrorism Act during the student protests.
BOOM reached out to Zee News for a response and will update this article if we receive one. Following BOOM's queries, the Facebook posts in question were deleted; however, at the time of publication, no editorial note or clarification had been issued.
