Tirupati Protest Video Falsely Shared As Delhi Police Action During BRICS

A video of police using force against protesters in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, is being falsely shared as an incident of police action against young protesters in Delhi during the BRICS Summit.

BOOM found that the video is from Tirupati where paramedical students protested on September 12 against mandatory 12-hour hospital shifts and over pending stipends.

The 18th BRICS Summit was held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.

The Claim

The video was shared on Facebook with the claim that Delhi Police used force against young protesters and dragged female protesters on the streets while international leaders were in the capital for the BRICS Summit.

What We Found

1) Video is from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh

BOOM broke the viral video into keyframes and ran a reverse image search. The results led us to a longer version of the footage posted by Deccan Herald, which reported that it is from a protest by paramedical students in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, on September 12.

We also found a report by The Times of India from September 13 carrying visuals from the same protest.

According to the report, interns pursuing BSc Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) and other allied health sciences courses, along with student-union representatives, had gathered at Garuda Circle in Alipiri, Tirupati.

The students were protesting against mandatory 12-hour hospital shifts and demanding the release of a pending monthly stipend of ₹15,000.
