Nashik Assault Video Shared With False Communal Claim And Linked To Bengal Polls

A video from Nashik, Maharashtra, is being shared with a false communal claim that it shows a Muslim woman being dragged out of her house and assaulted in Kolkata after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in West Bengal.

The Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) released a report documenting 34 incidents of violence, including communal violence, across at least eight districts in West Bengal between May 4 and May 7 following the BJP’s assembly election victory.

      The Claim:

The video is being shared on X with a caption claiming that BJP supporters in Kolkata are targeting Muslims after the party’s victory in West Bengal.

In Kolkata, BJP extremists are running a steamroller over Muslims.
They are conducting house-to-house searches in Muslim homes, dragging people out of their houses, and subjecting them to inhuman torture.#CarrierComesToAP #OpSindoorVictory #TVKFailshttps://t.co/HNocFACOJD

      What We Found:

      1) Video from Nashik

We broke the video into key-frames and ran a reverse image search using Google Lens. The search results showed that the same video was being shared in March, stating that it is an incident from Nashik when a woman and her daughter were assaulted over a financial dispute. Additionally, we can hear a woman speak in Marathi in the video.

      2) Local reports on the incident

We also found several local YouTube video reports on the incident with a byte from the victim Sameena Shaikh, who stated that she and her daughter were allegedly attacked by a man named Manohar Rathore and his wife over a financial dispute.

The report title when translated reads, "Woman Assaulted in Jail Road Area; Incident Stems from Financial Dispute"

      3) Geo-location

On checking replies to tweets with the video from March and using cues like the area mentioned in local reports, we were able to geo-locate the area where the incident occurred.
