Indian Media Outlets Misreport Vietnam Siblings' Video As Nepal
BOOM found that the viral video was shot by a Vietnamese content creator and is unrelated to the recent devastating floods in Nepal.
A video from Vietnam has been misreported by Indian media outlets as showing two minor siblings searching for their parents after the devastating flash floods in Nepal.
More than 1,280 people have died and over 5,600 remain missing on both sides of the China-Nepal border following the flash floods in the Himalayas.
The Claim:
News outlets including The Times of India, India Today NE, Republic, Times Now and News18 misreported about the video claiming that it showed two young siblings searching for their parents after being separated from them during the recent floods in Nepal.
What We Found:
1) Video posted by Vietnamese content creator
We broke the video into keyframes and ran a reverse image search using Google lens on them. The results showed that the original video was posted by a Vietnamese content creator @thienduyennet on Instagram. The caption with the video claimed that the little boy carried his younger sibling under the scorching sun.
In another video, a man can be heard speaking in Vietnamese and offering the children clothes and snacks. A Vietnamese journalist told BOOM that the man can be heard saying, “It is too hot but you have to carry the baby on your shoulder. Here are the hats and cakes. Let’s eat! Love you! Poor you!"
While the reporter was not able to confirm the location, she said that the accent is indigenous to the Northern part of Vietnam which is a mountainous region.
BOOM could not independently verify the incident in the video and has reached out to @thienduyennet for a response.
Additionally, The Statesman spoke to the content creator, who said that the video was filmed in Ha Giang, Vietnam.
