Wrestlers Ravi Dahiya, Deepak Punia Through To SF

Wrestlers Ravi Dahiya and Deepak Punia are into the semi-finals of the men's freestyle 57kg and men's freestyle 86kg event respectively. Dahiya won 14-4 on technical superiority against Bulgaria's Georgi Vangelov. Punia, on the other hand, won his quarter-final bout in the final seconds. Tied at 3-3 and losing on criteria, Punia pulled off a two-point move with just 10 seconds left on the clock to clinch a semi-final berth. Dahiya will take on Kazakhstan's Nurislam Sanayev in the semi-final while Punia will face the USA's David Taylor in the semi-final.

Anshu Malik lost in the first round of the women's 57kg freestyle wrestling event losing 8-2 to Belarus' third seed Iryna Kurachkina. Malik will now wait to see if Kurachkina makes it to the final to qualify for the repechage round.

Neeraj Chopra Through To Javelin Throw Final

Neeraj Chopra has cruised into the final of the men's javelin throw event after topping the qualifiers with a throw of 86.65. However, Shivpal Singh failed to make it to the final after finishing with a best throw of 76.40, well below the qualifying mark. London 2012 champion Keshorn Walcott and 2019 World champion Anderson Peters, however, failed to make the final.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor Out Of Shot Put Final

Tajinderpal Singh Toor failed to qualify for the final of the men's shot put after failing to throw past the qualifying mark of 21.20m for the final. The 26-year-old also finished 13th in the group with a best throw of 19.99m ending his slim hopes of qualifying by virtue of being among the top 12 throwers. In shot put, all throwers who reach the qualifying mark or the 12 best throwers make it to the final.

Gymnastics star Simone Biles won bronze in the balance beam final, a week after withdrawing from multiple events to take care of her mental health. China's Guan Chenchen won gold while compatriot Tang Xijing won silver. Biles withdrew from all-around, uneven bars, floor exercise and vault finals due to a phenomenon called the "twisties" where gymnasts are unable to locate themselves in air mid-routines.

Wrestler Sonam Malik Loses On Olympic Debut

19-year-old Sonam Malik lost in the first round of the women's 62 kg wrestling event to Mongolia's Bolortuya Khurelkhuu on criteria. Malik led 2-0 until the final 30 seconds of her bout before Khurelkhuu pulled off a two-point move and take the lead. In wrestling, ties are decided on three criteria. Malik won both her points for different moves (1,1) but Khurelkhuu had the higher scoring move (2). Malik is still in contention to win bronze via repechage.

India Lose To Belgium In Men's Hockey Semi-Final

India's hopes of winning a first men's hockey gold in more than 40 years ended in Tokyo after they lost to world champions Belgium in the semi-final 5-2. Despite leading 2-1 in the second quarter and tied at 2-2 in the fourth quarter, the Indian defence succumbed to the relentless Belgian pressure as penalty corner specialist Alexander Hendrickx scored a hat-trick to take Belgium to their second successive Olympic final. India will play the loser of the other semi-final between Australia and Germany for the bronze medal.

India's Shooting Campaign Ends

The Indian shooting contingent's dismal campaign came to an end after Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Sanjeev Rajput failed to qualify for the final of the men's 50m rifle 3 positions event. Tomar scored 1167-63x to finish 21st while Rajpur scored 1157-55x to finish 32nd. For the second successive Olympics, India have failed to win a medal in shooting.
