Supreme court had in April 2016 appointed two amicus curiae on the appeal of the four convicts against their death penalty. Convicts in their letter argue that the two lawyers had taken a position against them in several television debates and cannot be neutral.
Delhi high court had confirmed the death sentence of the four convicts for rape and murder of 23-year-old Jyoti Singh, a paramedic student. Convicts then moved the Supreme Court which stayed their execution.
