Top Economic Priorities For Prime Minister Modi

Checking inflation would be priority No 1 for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his council of ministers.

While Dr. Arvind Virmani, Head, ChintanLive.org, feels Budget would be an important vision document for the new Government, Rajeev Mantri, co-founder, India Enterprise Council, feels setting out the vision plan for infrastructure would be the next priority.

BoomNews's show #IndiaHangout, co-anchored by Govindraj Ethiraj and Ayaz Memon, also highlighed other key challenges for the Modi Government, and what lies ahead for the nation.

Virmani feels that there could be changes in foreign direct investment (FDI) rules in defence. "The BJP manifesto said Food Corporation of India (FCI) would be broken up. That is one thing to look forward to," Mantri added.

Virmani was also of the view that the slogan of eradicating poverty and working for the poor has not actually achieved anything. "Malnutrition/stunting is due to bad sanitation & related issues. Programes like food security will not achieve anything," Virmani said.

When queried whether the cabinet is a command-and-control type, Virmani was clear that Modi is going to be a hands-on Prime Minister. "Each ministry will have their priorities, and the PM will pursue all of them."

Mantri felt that it is a good development that we have a politician who is looking beyond narrow interests.
