A video of people gathered on a street chanting 'Narendra Modi Zindabad' is being shared online with the false claim that it shows people in Nepal voicing support for the Indian prime minister.
BOOM found that the video is from Maldives when PM Modi visited in July this year.
Nepal was rocked by anti-government protests this week that was triggered by a ban on social media platforms, which quickly turned into a larger movement led by Gen-Z protesters to voice their anger over systemic corruption and high levels of unemployment. The protests led to vandalism of the parliament and supreme court, along with the ouster of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and other ministers. An interim government has now been formed under the leadership of Sushila Karki, the country’s former chief justice.
The Claim
On Instagram, several users posted the video with the Hindi caption, "See how sloganeering of Modi ji Zindabad is happening in Nepal."
