A video from Indonesia showing demonstrators breaking down gates of a building, while police used tear gas and water cannons to suppress them is being shared on social media falsely linking it to the protests in Nepal.
On September 9, 2025, Prime Minister of Nepal KP Sharma Oli resigned after Gen-Z-led anti-corruption protests. The protests were sparked over a social media ban and intensified after police firing on September 8 in Kathmandu that killed more than 20. Angry protesters torched the Parliament, government offices, and politicians’ homes around the country.

What We Found:
1) Video is from Indonesia
We ran a reverse image search using Google lens and results showed that it predates the Nepal protests. The video is from Pati Square in Central Java, Indonesia. Protests began in Pati Regency, Central Java around August 10, after the proposed 250% hike in land and building taxes, which was later canceled. Several protesters were injured during these clashes with security forces.
2) Visuals in news reports
Protesters had tried to storm the Regent’s Office and set a police vehicle on fire. Similar visuals can be seen in local news reports as in the viral video.
3) Geo-location of viral video
We also found the location in the viral video using Google Maps, which matched with the location at the Regional Secretariat of Pati Regency in Pati, Central Java, Indonesia. This can be seen here.
