With Google’s new Nano Banana editor, you can drape yourself in a vintage saree, turn into a pocket-sized 3D figurine, or even hug your younger self. The same too can also convert an Indian politician’s saree into hijab, or conjure George Soros into photos of political leaders.
In India’s hyper-polarised social feeds, that shift from fun to dangerous disinformation takes a single prompt.
In late August, Google quietly promoted Nano Banana, a DeepMind-built image model, into the Gemini app’s editor, promising targeted, natural-language edits, character consistency and multi-image blends.
This means, you can change a certain aspect of a photo, while keeping the rest intact, with novice-level instructions.
Google says the outputs carry invisible SynthID watermarks and, in many cases, a small visible mark. It has also aligned with the emerging Content Credentials (C2PA) provenance standard. However, experts warn that this is hardly enough to subdue misuse of the tool.
The Disinfo Potential
To test the real-world risk, we used existing Indian disinformation tropes and asked the editor to recreate them. Each edit was executed cleanly, without warnings or blocks:

Blind Spots
Nano Banana’s virality has propelled Gemini to the top of app charts.
TechCrunch reports that since Nano Banana’s release, Gemini climbed to No. 1 on the U.S. App Store on 12 September and became a top-five iPhone app in 108 countries; Google says 23 million first-time users have shared over 500 million images since launch.
India leads usage, with retro Bollywood looks, AI saree portraits and cityscape selfies driving the “I think the potential risk is very high because these tools are capable of generating highly realistic photos and can be used to mislead viewers,” Siwei Lyu, SUNY Empire Innovation Professor and Director of the Media Forensic Lab at the University at Buffalo told BOOM over email.
“I think Google includes both a visible watermark and an invisible watermark known as SynthID,” Lyu noted. “Because the details of SynthID are currently not public, it should provide a high level authentication of AI-generated images created using Google AI tools. However, it may be eventually broken by dedicated attackers so to make it effective, continuous developments are needed.”
Lyu added that while the detection algorithms on their Deepfake-o-Meter tool seem to be able to expose such images, “it is hard to keep pace with the continuous improvement of genAI tools.”
Sam Gregory, Executive Director at WITNESS, highlighted that his verification workflow starts with media literacy, and not the verdict of detection tools.
“Don’t start with AI detection tools.” Gregory told BOOM.
“Journalists and the public should first apply the SIFT technique,” he adds. “1) Stop—check your emotional reaction; 2) Investigate the source; 3) Find alternative coverage; 4) Trace the original with reverse image search.”
“Then screen for ‘tells’, use OSINT checks on location/lighting/metadata, and finally use AI detection tools, ideally an ensemble dashboard. Even in the best of circumstances, good tools are likely not more than 85–90% accurate in the real world,” Gregory notes.
Lyu’s verification advice is deliberately simple: “Always check the source of the image, and do not trust unreliable sources for the authenticity of images.”
Google points to safety guidelines, moderation tools and watermarking as proof of guardrails. It has even restricted election queries and paused people-image generation after bias scandals. But none of these measures grapple with the kind of subtle, context-specific political composites that the Nano Banana editor now makes effortlessly.
Gregory argued for pairing Google’s invisible SynthID with always-visible Content Credentials, so that anyone can tap an image and see a plain-language “recipe” of edits. He also called for tighter policy restrictions around sensitive contexts.
Lyu, meanwhile, cautioned that watermarks alone will not hold forever, as determined attackers may find ways around them. Both stressed that safeguards need continuous strengthening, and Gregory added that the public needs accessible provenance tools.
