State assembly elections in 2016 turned out to be an even battle–two incumbents retained power while two governments were overthrown by the people.
Two chief ministers–Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal and J Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu–led their parties, Trinamool Congress and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), back to power for the next five years.
Congress lost power in Assam and Kerala, and the opposition in these two states–Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF)–will form the governments soon.
The agendas for the new winning coalitions could be different:
BJP is trying to address the infiltration issue in Assam.
LDF is trying to address the issue of corruption in Kerala.
