Dhananjay Yeshwant Chandrachud, popularly referred as D.Y. Chandrachud, born on November 11, 1959 in Mumbai. He holds the distinction of serving as the 50th Chief Justice of India, from November 2022 to November 2024. Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court of India in May 2016, he served as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court from October 2013 to May 2016 and as a Judge of the Bombay High Court from March 2000 to October 2013. In his judicial career, Chandrachud has been part of the bench that delivered judgements such as the Right to Privacy verdict in the Justice K.S. Puttaswamy & Anr. vs Union Of India Ors. (2017) case.

In March 2024, BOOM found a viral video clip being widely shared out of context, claiming that Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta presented his arguments before CJI Chandrachud and without adjourning he and other judges walked away.

While debunking this misleading video, we found the part where the viral video ends, in the original live stream, CJI Chandrachud is adjusting his chair and talking to another judge. He then continues to hear Mehta's argument and then goes on to also hear arguments made by senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi. After that, the hearing concluded with the court dictating the order where it directed SBI to disclose ‘alpha-numeric details’ by March 21, 2024. The part where Mehta resumes his arguments after CJI Chandrachud adjusts his chair has been removed from the viral video.

Another false news that BOOM came across related to CJI Chandrachud was in August 2023, claiming that “Amit Shah ignored CJI Chandrachud at the recent Independence Day event. We found that the longer version of the video shows that they both greeted each other and shook hands and after Shah turned away. It was cropped out of context to mislead the people. .

One more fake news that was being peddled related to CJI Chandrachud, showed him urging the people of India to protest in the streets against the government, which was debunked by BOOM in August 2023.

We reached out to the office of the CJI and the office of Secretary General of the Supreme Court and confirmed this and the CJI's office asserted that no such statement was circulated, nor had the CJI put out anything of the sort. "It would be preposterous for any sitting judge to do so," the CJI's office told BOOM.
