Rio Olympics 2016 : Boxing Explained


The boxing tournaments at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are scheduled to take place from 6 to 21 August 2016 at the Pavilion 6 of Riocentro.


Olympic Boxing will feature 10 men’s weight categories. Women’s boxing will also feature as a full medal event for the first time. Men’s bouts take place over three rounds of three minutes each, while women’s are four rounds of two minutes each.

Boxers score points for every punch they land successfully on their opponent’s head or upper body. If a boxer is knocked to the ground and fails to get up within a count of 10 from referee, the bout is over.
