Citizen India: How Do We Tackle Crime Against Women?

Citizen India: How Do We Tackle Crime Against Women?

How often do you listen to the big debates, the high-strung arguments and the never-ending parade of experts? And how often do you ask, at the end of it all: am I heard?

Citizen India with Shazia Ilmi is a promise to help you do that. This first-time, YouTube television show will draw attention to your views, your  concerns and  your desires. By involving you in the conversation. By making your voice heard. By shining the light on issues that are important to you and affect all of us.

Did you know that data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows a near 70% jump in crimes against women between the previous decade and the current one? Moreover, there has been a 52% increase in rape cases. And these are just the reported ones. The recent case of an alleged rape of a young finance company professional  by a Uber taxi driver in New Delhi has once again highlighted how unsafe our streets are.

We know the problem but do we know the solutions. Do we have a voice in determining them?

In our first episode, we ask the question that has been come back to plague us. Do you think the government is doing enough to ensure women’s safety? What changes would you really want to see? What measures would you implement? What can stop these frequent incidents of rape and violence against women?

Write in to Shazia Ilmi expressing your views and your solutions. Send a link to your YouTube video with you talking about issues that really affect you. Or someone you feel has a strong opinion, that deserves to be heard. Send us visuals that will allow us to see matters from your point of view.

Shazia will feature it in Citizen India, launching shortly on Boom.

We look forward to hearing from you soon. Because change involves you too.

    First of all ]
    1.Carry out Delhi police reforms.
2.Bring Delhi police under Delhi government and raise a separate force for VIP (futile show of importance and power) security.
3.Gender sensitization education starting from class 1
4.Change the law to include mandatory castration for serial and gang rapists as well as for
    paedophiles.
    5. Start a national registry for sexual offenders which provides details such as name, fathers name, date of birth, current address, photograph and Voter ID /Aadhaar /PAN card number of the convicted sex criminal. This database should be accessible to public and employers. Once the names are posted in the database they should be deleted only on the death of the sex criminal.

Massive dislocation of family structure due to highly centralised development around 5-6 mega cities has led to migration of youth from rural to urban areas in search of jobs . These youth with low skills find low paid jobs living in deprived conditions. Added to this, a collapsed criminal justice system, cops living off criminals, you have a deadly cycle of criminals not being punished and encouraged to commit crime repeatedly. Cops carrying lathis and WW- I weapons and colonial mindset cannot solve any problem. My brother was a victim of bus dacoity and later on, the police caught the dacoits. But the constable who came to serve the summons to my brother to identity the dacoits was requesting my brother not to identify the dacoits as they had incurred huge loss in this dacoity !!!
Large scale adoption of high tech gadgets is the solution. All PCR vans to be equipped with finger print readers connected to National Crime Records Bureau for instant ID of persons being checked.
Meanwhile a simple plastic whistle costing Rs. 10/- slung around the lady’s neck or wrist , while going out in the night will go a long way in attracting attention as a whistle can be heard over a longer distance and above other noises . Also it has psychological effect on the attacker !!
