Explained: The Fight for Siachen Glacier

India lost 10 more soldiers in an avalanche last week in one of most inhospitable battlefields in the world. A look at the 3-decade old dispute to keep control of the Siachen Glacier.

 

The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalaya Mountains, just northeast of the point where the Line of Control between India and Pakistan ends. The Siachen Glacier became a bone of contention following a vague demarcation of territory as per the Simla Agreement of 1972, which did not exactly specify who had authority over the Siachen Glacier area.
