Britain's new Prime Minister Theresa May pledged to forge a new role for the country following its decision to leave the European Union in her first public address after taking office.

Theresa May is Britain's only second female head of government after Margaret Thatcher. 59 year-old Theresa May - an MP for Maidenhead since 1997 and is UK’s longest serving home secretary in 50 years (since May 2010).

 

May assumed charge after David Cameron stepped down as Britons voted to leave the EU in a historic referendum in June 2016.
