India has got the backing of Switzerland in its bid to become a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) — an elite group of 48 countries which controls transfer of nuclear and high technology in the world —ahead of the group’s crucial meeting.
Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann announced his country’s support to India’s membership in the 48-member grouping after holding talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two countries also resolved to strengthen cooperation in combating tax evasion and black money.

India had submitted an application to become a member of the NSG on May 12. After the meeting on June 9, an elaborate plenary session of the NSG is going to take place in Seoul on June 24.
With Switzerland’s promise of support, the momentum for India’s entry into the NSG is expected to pick up.
