Study Finds Carcinogenic Substances In Breads In India

By - A Staff Writer | 26 May 2016 7:50 AM GMT

Report by Centre For Science And Environment says 84% of 38 types of bread sold in India contains potassium bromate and potassium iodate. While potassium bromate is carcinogenic, potassium iodate can cause thyroid-related issues. The compound Kbro3 a bromate of potassium takes the form of white crystals and is used to make breads fluffy.

Potassium bromate is banned in Japan, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and European Union.

The bread samples which were tested included brands such as Britannia, Harvest Gold and the fast food chains - KFC, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Subway, McDonald's and Slice of Italy.
