Remembering Major Dhyan Chand On National Sports Day

August 29 is celebrated as National Sports Day in India, marking the birthday of Dhyan Chand, who is regarded as the greatest hockey player the world has seen till date.

 

On this day every year, the President of India gives away sports related awards, like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and the Dronacharya Award at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

 

Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905 and this year marks his 110th birthday anniversary. In a career spanning from 1926-1948, he scored over an estimated 1000 goals. The hockey wizard is widely regarded as the greatest athlete India has ever produced.
