By - Nikhila Makker | 28 Nov 2014 9:03 AM GMT

The demise of Australian cricketer Phil Hughes after a freak accident on field marked a tragic day in the world of sport.

The cricketing community has come together and there has been an outpour of tributes for the 25-year-old batsman.

A Sydney cricket fan, Paul D. Taylor tweeted a picture of his bat against the front door with the hashtag #PutOutYourBats as a tribute to Hughes.

This hashtag is now trending on Twitter as everyone across the world is using this simple yet poignant way to pay their respects to the Australian player.

Google Australia have also honoured Hughes with a touching doodle of a bat resting against a wall.

At the Melbourne Cricket Ground, flags flew at half-mast as a symbol of mourning. Local cricket teams around Australia and India paused to observe a minute's silence for the Australian international. Former and current cricket stars and fans from all parts of the globe have shared similar pictures of their bats put out on various social media platforms as tributes.
