Petition Seeking U.S. Response In Bhopal Gas Tragedy Case Secures 100,000 Signatures

An online petition by Bhopal gas tragedy survivors and groups representing their cause has garnered more than 100,000 signatures which would compel the US government to issue a formal response to the petition.

As per an Obama administration policy, if a petition secures more than 100,000 signatures within a month of being launched, the administration will issue a formal response to it.

A gas leak from the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal during the intervening night of December 2 and 3, 1984 had killed thousands and has been dubbed the biggest industrial disaster in the world.

The Bhopal district court had 2 years ago issued 4 notices to Dow Chemicals on the gas leak. However, the US department of Justice had not served these notices. The activists accused the US department of Justice of breaching a 15 year old mutual legal assistance treaty between the US and India by refusing to serve the 4 notices issued by the Bhopal Court.
