Celebrated Pakistani philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi, founder of the non-profit Edhi Foundation that provided succour to millions of poor and destitute over the years, died in Karachi at the age of 88.

Referred to as Pakistan’s Mother Teresa, Abdul Sattar Edhi, died on July 8 after a prolonged battle with kidney ailments. Edhi was a revered figure in Pakistan with many referring to him as a ‘saint’ for his six decades of service to Pakistan’s poor and needy.
Edhi’s charity ran one of the world’s biggest private ambulance services as well as set up Pakistan’s oldest orphanage centre. Edhi’s graveyard service, ensuring dignified burial to the dead was his first step to serving people after his move to Karachi during the partition.
Edhi’s funeral was attended by thousands and many walked kilometres to pay homage to ‘a great servant of humanity’.
