Nobel Peace laureate Kailash Satyarthi began the 'Bharat Yatra' for Safe Childhood, Safe India. It is a march against child sexual abuse and trafficking. One million people are participating in the march and are going to cover 11,000 kilometers. Satyarthi expects that during the duration of this march, one crore Indians will take a pledge against violence and child sexual abuse and trafficking.
Last year, around 9000 children were trafficked, up 27% from the previous year. Last year also saw about 15,000 child sexual abuse cases registered, according to National Crime Records Bureau. But the rate of conviction in these cases were only 4% with 90% cases pending before various courts across the country. Satyarthi says that it is a fact that our children are not safe at home and hence he hopes to raise awareness about the broader issue of violence against children, child sexual abuse and trafficking of children.
